The Myth of Comparison
How could you possibly compare yourself to someone else?
Think about how much time you have been on this earth.
Try to think about the sheer volume of experiences you have had over your lifetime so far, I mean really think about it.
Try to think about the volume of things you have experienced in your life,
the number of weeks,
the number of days,
the number of hours,
the number of moments,
you have had.
All leading up to where you are right now.
Now think about this, and try to follow me here:
Each moment, throughout your entire life, has been a series of detours in the road that is your journey, that has culminated in you ending up where you are right now.
Every single moment, across your entire lifetime.
Now think about the person you’re comparing yourself to, and based on their age compared to yours, how many millions of life-altering moments they have also had to lead them to where they are.
That is an insane amount of variables in which to try to compare yourself to.
It is literally impossible. I hope you see that by now.
If not let me repeat it:
Every single moment in your life,
every choice you make,
and have ever made,
or has been made for you,
has acted as a fork in the road,
over and over and over,
eventually leading to where you are right now.
That person you are comparing yourself to, has gone through the exact same process, with the same plethora of moments, and choices, and forks in the road, leading them to where they are.
You simply cannot compare yourself to that person, or any person, because everyone has gone through this same experience.
Not only that, but the person you are comparing yourself to,
has different goals,
a different perspective on life,
different values,
different opportunities,
a different mindset.
Do you realize that you could be comparing yourself to someone who doesn’t even want the same life that you do when you compare yourself to them?
You see the guy on Instagram with the Lambos and the houses and the private jets and you want that.
But that guy might want a $1 billion business and real estate empire that he can pass on to generations of family and spend all of his time with his kids.
Or he might be miserable because he’s not worth a billion and only worth 10 million.
You don’t know what his goals are, what his expectations for his happiness are.
I’m not talking about the old adage of money doesn’t buy happiness, I don’t buy into that.
What really buys happiness is when your expectation of reality, and the reality you see, are as close together as possible. That’s why competition and comparison cannot and do not exist.
There is an abundance of stuff out there, where everyone can be successful, everyone can be happy.
There are an infinite number of moments in our lives that have led to our current reality that we simply cannot comprehend, and we simply cannot compare that to anyone else.
So what can we do?
We can figure it out for ourselves.
We must figure out what our goals are,
what our definition of success looks like.
What gives our lives purpose and meaning,
and what we really want to achieve and experience before our time is inevitably up.
Once we do that, that’s all we focus on.
We focus on our goals,
on our personal development,
on our journey,
on our happiness,
on our fulfillment and our purpose,
and that’s it.
Let go of everything else.
Let go of the need for competition,
let go of judgment and comparison.
And I promise you, you will achieve more,
and you will be happier doing it.
Because it will be what you want, the life that you want.
And all those choices,
over all those moments in your life,
you now take control of,
you now steer the ship.
Let go of comparison and competition, and focus on you.
To Your Success,
Alec.
